Kew Gardens

We went to Kew Gardens. The lady who was doing our tour talked about how plants work and how they take in carbon-dioxide and turn it into oxygen. They also need light and water, but they don’t all need heat. She took us into what she called a desert because the room had desert plants and a warm climate (and loads of people!!!!)

She told us why plants are important to the food chain. It is because let’s say owls for example they eat mice and mice eat plants. Without plants all food chains would collapse!

We saw a plant that was so thick because it held so much water in them. Cacti plants have spines so that animals don’t want to eat their juicy leaves. They also have thing white spines on them that look fluffy, but aren’t. They are there to act like a kind of duvet as it gets cold at night in the desert. During the day, they offer shade too.

The lady told us how carnivorous plants work. Some of them curl up and some snap shut. The Venus Fly Trap snaps shut. They then absorb the goodness from the insect.

She also showed us some Tulip Trees. I think she said that they came from South America. They are used for making canoes.
