We had great fun that day. We rode to the end of the line and back. Then mum accosted a man from one of the sheds as the education officer had not arrived. He went and got some worksheets and information about how steam engines work from the office. We had great fun and it was a lot better than having the education officer because the man we had was interested in the engines and how they worked. He was one of the train drivers. He let us climb up on the foot plate. He also showed us inside the steam engine he was working on and let us look through the pipes.

He also showed us a big engine that they are in the middle of restoring. It is going to take several years to finish. We saw one of the wheels that had just been cast. It was huge and taller than two of us standing on each other’s shoulders.
